Warehouses operated by high street fashion retailers including Marks & Spencer are clogging up with unsold stock as supply-chain pressures ease and shoppers rein in spending.
M&S, the UK’s biggest clothing retailer, has asked suppliers to postpone deliveries to its warehouses and has delayed finalising orders for next year. The retailer has discounted its coats, jackets and boots by 20 per cent — an apparent attempt to clear excess stock after mild weather sapped demand.
“The three weeks leading into Black Friday were awful and we all fell through the floor,” one fashion boss said. “The discounting has started and it will carry on right through to January now.”
