Gordon Brown walked out with her for a while before ditching her for her more alluring sister, Profligacy. George Osborne took her up on the rebound and Philip Hammond extolled her virtues.

Living within our means became the new orthodoxy, an economic and moral imperative. Now, in this grim, early winter election campaign, it is being casually thrown away. You would expect as much from a hard-Left Labour Party; but the Conservatives, sad to say, are complicit in a welfarist auction now reaching absurd heights to see who can offer voters the most free stuff.
