Taxpayers express mixed feelings about property purchase

Dec. 8—WILLIMANTIC — Taxpayers expressed mixed feelings about the purchase of a property on Boston Post Road during a town meeting Tuesday night, ultimately approving the purchase.

The town is purchasing the property, which is at 460 Boston Post Road, from Patricia Donahue By a vote of 13 to 4, taxpayers authorized the town to spend $126,500 on the purchase.

That appropriation includes the purchase price, which is $ 124,000, and $2,500 for closing costs. ” The property is zoned commercial,” Windham Town Manager Jim Rivers said.

The property was appraised at $130,000 by a Fairfield company.

The name of the firm was unavailable by presstime.

Rivers said Windham Director of Development Matthew Vertefeuille and Windham Town Attorney Rich Cody recommended the company that did the appraisal, noting that they had done work for the town in the past. He said there aren’t any plans for the town to sell the property, debunking a rumor that has been out there. Upon the request of resident Jean de Smet, the vote was amended to include a stipulation that the land be preserved in perpetuity.
