Three Florida Safeway stores are offering up to 40 percent off goods as they prepare to close after being acquired by Publix.

The total inventory blowout is going on at 950 NE 50th St. in Oakland Park, 10500 Ulmerton Road in Largo and 503 E. Altamonte Drive in Altamonte Springs.

Signs are posted around the store listing discounts:

Save 20 percent on produce, meat and seafood
Save 25 percent on basic grocery items and snacks
Save 30 percent on candy
Save 20 percent on imported and domestic beer and soda
Save 30 percent on wine
Save 40 percent on batteries
Save 40 percent on Starbucks merchandise and bagged coffee
Save 40 percent on floral supplies

All sales are final and new items are not being restocked. A Safeway manager said the Oakland Park store would close on Aug. 25.

“We expect the deal to close sometime in September and our plan is to open all three Publix locations in the fourth quarter of this year,” said Publix spokeswoman Nicole Krauss. The pharmacies closed in July. Customer prescriptions were automatically transferred to Publix pharmacy, the company said.

Publix Supermarkets acquired the only three Safeway stores in Florida in June. The pharmacies closed in July. All prescriptions were transferred to Publix, the company said.

Even though the Safeway in Oakland Park is across the street from a busy Publix in the Northridge Shopping Center, it will still be converted, said Krauss. There are no plans to close the current Publix once the new store opens, she said, saying there are Publix markets across the street from each other in Miami Beach.

The fate of the in-store Starbucks and liquor stores have not been determined, and more information will be available closer to the grand openings, Krauss said.

The Lakeland-based grocer did not say how many employees were be affected by the closings, but that they were being provided with details on how to apply for employment at Publix stores.

Publix operates  more than 780 supermarkets in Florida, which includes 1,187 stores in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, South Carolina and North Carolina, along with 238 liquor stores.
