Montgomery police officers will begin wearing body cameras later this summer as a result of action taken by the village board Monday evening, June 24.
In a 5-0 ballot, the board approved a request from Police Chief Phil Smith to spend $50,000 in previously budgeted funds to pay for the village’s share of the cost for the camera equipment and related computer software.
According to a memo Smith presented to the board, the total cost for the camera equipment and computer software from WatchGuard of Allen, TX, is $99,805.
The village will use a previously awarded U.S. Department of Justice grant to make up the difference between the total purchase price and the previously budgeted $50,000 in village funds.
Smith noted in his memo the total purchase price, which includes 35 cameras, was determined through a state bid process.
He continued, “We chose WatchGuard because we currently use their in-squad camera systems and we have a server that can accommodate the necessary data requirements for the WatchGuard body worn cameras…We have also tested the body worn cameras with positive results…”
When questioned by board member Steve Jungermann, Smith said he expects the department will take delivery on the cameras in about four weeks and then begin training officers in their use.
Smith added he is hopeful that officers will begin wearing the cameras beginning in mid-to-late August.
Board member Denny Lee was absent from Monday’s meeting the board vote.
