Jangaon: Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao inaugurated an Indira Kranthi Patham (IKP)-run mango procurement centre at Pedda Pahad village in the district on Tuesday.

The Minister inspected the quality of fruits and interacted with members of self-help groups of the IKP. Errabelli said that women who were successful in paddy procurement and preparation of masks were also proving that they were no less than men in any task.

“Telangana government will procure 3,000 metric tonnes of mangoes through SERP with the help of IKP women in the State. A total of 13 centres will procure the mangoes in the State. Of them, Khammam, Nagarkurnool, Siddipet, Vikarabad and Jagitial centres have already started procurement. Mango procurement centres in Mancherial and Suryapet are ready for inauguration,” he said and added that 300 metric tonnes of mangoes were already procured.

The Minister said apart from mangoes, fruits like bananas, papaya and watermelons were also  procured. He appealed to people to utilise the opportunity to buy fruits from IKP centres and encourage women.

MLA M Yadagiri Reddy said the mango trees were withering away in the past due to non-availability of irrigation water. “But now farmers were getting profits due to availability of water,” he added. District Collector K Nikhila was present at the programme.
