Ashland businessman and Mayor Gene Rhorer purchased the Boone County Journal on March 1.
“I bought the Journal to keep it local and keep it open. It’s important to keep the newspaper in Ashland,” Rhorer said.
Rhorer has been a resident of Ashland for 25 years, and he has served as mayor for the past six years.
Owned and operated by Bruce Wallace since 2001, the weekly newspaper is four front-and-back pages. Wallace sold the paper so he could retire.
According to a Wednesday article from the Boone County Journal, the paper officially changed ownership immediately after the sale closed Friday. The terms of the sale were not disclosed.
Gene Rhorer — who owns Ashland PC Technologies — purchased not only the Boone County Journal but also its website, bocojo.com, and the annual “Southern Boone Magazine” from Wallace and his wife, Susan.
Rhorer doesn’t foresee a conflict of interest because of his role in city government, he said, and the paper’s reporters will continue to cover the town’s news as they have been doing. Rhorer said there will be no immediate changes to the Journal, as it currently runs smoothly. Later on, Rhorer said he would like to use his background in technology to work on the paper’s internet presence.
“I’m not a writer, and I’m not an editor, and I don’t want to be,” Rhorer said.
The Ashland newspaper has been in operation for almost 50 years.
